Y-10 & 12 Saber and Y-12 Epee Results from the Gardner Family: In the Y-10 Saber, there were 4 fencers (2 were veterans from San Diego). John scored 1 win in the pools to place 3rd into D.E.s, but then lost to #2 to finish as tied for third. However, the San Diego fencers hadn’t been to the previous tournaments in the league. The other fencer who was in contention against John for league points didn’t show, so John finished with the highest league points and won this season’s Southern California Youth Challenge Y-10 Saber Champion trophy based on cumulative points from first, second and third place finishes.

In the Y-12 Saber, there were 11 fencers. John won 2 of the pool bouts. This placed him as 6th into D.E.s. He then beat the 11th seed to make it to the table of 8. But then was paired against the #3 seed fencer, Tibbets. She got him for the first bout, but he got her in the second bout, forcing a third bout. After very active coaching, she got him 5-3 in that bout.

Wesley also medaled in his first tournament. So before long, we should have area clubs quite fearful of the Conejo name. He won 6 out his 8 pool bouts. This placed him 3rd going into D.E.s. He won the first round, but then was defeated by the fencer that went on to win first. So he finished 3rd.

John fenced in the Y-10 Foil tournament at Presidio in Santa Barbara on Saturday.

They have several very talented young fencers, all very mobile with their footwork. The tournament had a total of 5 fencers in the Y-10 section, so it was one pool. In the pool, John won 2 of the bouts, losing two bouts 5-4, one on overtime. So John placed 3rd out of the pools into D.E.s. In the first round of D.E.s he lost the first bout to a fencer he beat 5-2 in the pools. But he then turned it around and picked up the next two to continue onward. This put him into the finals against the #1 seed fencer that beat him in the pools. But this time, John got him in the first two bouts to win first place.

Thanks again for all of the support.

John won 1st place in the Y-10 Foil section at the So. Calif. Youth Challenge today! Since he had previous 3rd and 1st place wins, this 1st place win earned him the “Y10 Foil SCYC League Championship” trophy as well!

For this tournament, there were 11 fencers, so there were two pools. John won all 5 bouts in his pool, with only 3 points total scored against him (1 each by 3 different fencers!) This included a 4-1 victory against the other front-runner, Molly, who he then faced again in the final D.E. bout.

After a bye in the first D.E. round, John beat the 2nd D.E. opponent twice with 5-0, then the semi-final opponent 5-0, 4-1. For the final D.E. round, Molly beat John 5-1 in the 1st bout. In the 2nd bout, John came back and got her 5-3. In the 3rd bout, it was 3-3 until John got the 4th point with 1 second left!
